Finding the Right Guide for Our Campaign
Every organization reaches a moment when the future demands more than the status quo. For us, that moment arrived when our leased space could no longer support our vision. If we wanted our school to thrive for generations, we needed a permanent home. (Before launching Contour Strategies LLC I was the head of an independent school).
The Vision and The Path
We envisioned a campus of our own—a place for learning, growth, and community. But we had never run a capital campaign, and the funds needed for land and development felt out of reach. We knew what we wanted, but we didn't know how to get there.
The Realization: Vision Alone Wasn’t Enough
Our board and community agreed: leasing was no longer sustainable. Owning our space meant stability and a future we could control. Yet, we lacked the experience and roadmap to pursue this bold step. The fear of setting an unrealistic goal or damaging our credibility loomed large. The unknowns were paralyzing.
We had nurtured strong donor relationships over the years, many of which were personal to me. A failed campaign could erode not just our plans, but the trust we had carefully built. These weren’t abstract fears—they were real barriers to action.
Why We Hired Bill
Our first challenge wasn’t execution—it was readiness. We needed to find a consultant to assess our readiness and provide a strategy to leverage our strengths, help mitigate our weaknesses, and guide us through unfamiliar terrain. But this wasn’t just about skills—it was about trust and cultural fit.
When we met Bill, everything changed. His experience was undeniable, but more importantly, he connected with us as people. He calmed our fears, understood our vision, and brought both competence and relational warmth. Bill walked alongside us, transforming uncertainty into confidence.
Lessons Before Launch
One of Bill’s key insights was that a successful campaign starts with a clear vision and readiness, not just tactics. We needed several things in place before launching:
A Clear Vision: People invest in causes they believe in. Our vision had to inspire.
Committed Leadership: Our executive leadership and board had to lead by example, with trust and enthusiasm.
Lead Donor Potential: A few lead donors were crucial to set the pace for others.
Strategic Urgency: We weren’t reacting to a crisis, but seizing a timely opportunity.
Without these, we risked faltering during the campaign. Bill’s early guidance made it clear he was the right partner.
The Campaign Launch Assessment
Next, Bill conducted a Campaign Launch Assessment—a feasibility study to test our case, identify major donors, strengthen leadership, establish a realistic timetable, and set realistic goals. This stage wasn’t about asking for money, but gathering vital insights to ensure success. It provided clarity, reduced risk, and allowed us to launch with confidence.
The Power of the Right Guide
Bill’s wisdom and experience helped us believe in what once seemed impossible. The campaign was a success, and afterward, Bill invited me to join his firm. A few years later, I launched Contour Strategies LLC, with Bill still advising me. His influence endures, not just in campaigns, but in relationships and leadership he has invested in.
Completing a capital campaign is a monumental step for any organization. With preparation, vision, and the right guidance, it can reshape your organization’s future.
