2025 Year in Review: Connection, Vision & Donor Commitment in a Transformative Year

As we reflect on 2025, one truth guided everything we witnessed in the nonprofit sector: meaningful connection still drives generosity and growth.

Despite federal funding cuts, fewer donors entering the pipeline, and increased competition for grants, nonprofits leaned into clarity, vision, and relationship-building—and saw remarkable success.

A Year Defined by Grounded Strategy & Human Connection

This year began with intentional stewardship and reflection, a theme echoed across our early-year guidance to clients: gratitude, database cleanup, and thoughtful planning set the tone for strong fundraising months ahead.

Across organizations, leaders stepped back from daily pressures and reconnected with their mission. As Halie reminded us, bold visions inspire brave investments, and nonprofits that embraced strategic planning saw momentum build in major gifts and campaign readiness

Meanwhile, donor experience took center stage. Inspired by Disney-level intentionality, nonprofits personalized their touchpoints and invited supporters into meaningful moments—whether through tours, stories, or mission-immersive experiences. Those who invested in donor experience saw stronger retention and deeper engagement.

Campaigns & Grants: Why Relationships Mattered Most in 2025

One of the most surprising themes of the year? Campaigns thrived in uncertainty.
Organizations that leaned into vision—rather than fear—saw campaigns bring clarity, discipline, and stability at a time when donors were eager for long-term partnership.

Similarly, the grant landscape grew more competitive than ever, making relationships—not volume—the true differentiator. Foundations funded organizations that treated them as partners and communicated clearly and consistently throughout the year.

Our Team’s Biggest Takeaways

Meaningful, face-to-face connection is still the most transformative force in fundraising. It strengthens donor loyalty and internal team culture—both essential for retention.
— From Campbell Haug, Associate Strategist
Foundation and corporate giving is just as relational as major gifts. Treat funders like partners, and your grant program will grow.
— From Brie Richards, Grants Strategist
Bold vision is not optional—it’s foundational. When leaders dream big and anchor their plans in future-focused strategy, donors rally with enthusiasm and significant gifts.
— From Halie Peplinski, Lead Strategist
Donors stay when they feel connected to the mission. Despite economic challenges, organizations that told compelling stories and created personal experiences crossed finish lines on major campaigns.
— From Shauna VanderLinden, Content Strategist
Resilience is a strategy, not just a trait. The strongest clients I worked with in 2025 stayed adaptive — listening closely, adjusting quickly, and showing up consistently for donors and their communities. In 2026, I’m focused on strengthening that adaptive muscle even further, pairing steady messaging with informed strategy so organizations stay relevant and well-funded.

Looking Ahead

If 2025 taught us anything, it’s that nonprofits are resilient—and donors continue to give boldly when they’re inspired, seen, and connected.

In 2026, we carry forward these truths:

  • Vision leads.

  • Relationships sustain.

  • Connection fuels generosity.

Here’s to a new year of courage, clarity, and meaningful impact.
